How to Insert a Line in Word

AutoFormat is a tool that allows you to insert a line in Word.

With the AutoFormat feature, you can quickly insert one line into a document. You can create a line by placing the cursor at the place you want to insert it. Next, press Enter.

Press the keys associated with the keyboard to create different types of lines

  • Single-line: Three spaces (—)
  • Plain double line: Three equal signs (===)
  • Broken or drawn line: Three asteris (***)
  • Bold single-line: Three underline symbols
  • Wavy Line: Three Tildes (~~~)
  • Triple line with thick center: Three numbers signs (###

To insert a line in Word, use the Horizontal Line Tool

Use the built-in Horizontal Line Tool to insert a line in a Word document.

  1. Place the cursor wherever you want to add a line.
  2. Go to the tab.

    When you open a Word document, either new or old, the default Home tab is selected.

  3. Select Paragraph and select Borders from the drop-down menu. Then, choose Horizontal Line.

  4. Double-click the line to change its appearance in the document.

  5. Modify the Horizontal Line Dialog Box to adjust the line’s width, height, and color.

To insert a line in a word, use the Shapes Menu

Another way to add lines to a Word document, is to draw them on the page. There are many line options available in the Shapes menu, including lines that have arrow points at one or both ends. You can customize the color and appearance of the line after you have drawn it.

  1. Place your cursor at the location where you want to draw a line.
  2. Go to the Inserttab.

  3. Select the Shapesdrop down arrow in the Illustrationsgroup.

  4. Choose a line shape in the Linesgroup.

  5. Drag the cursor over the area where you want the line in the Word document.

  6. Select the line to change the appearance of the line. This Format is a term used in some versions of Word.

  7. You can change the color or use a different line style in the shape format tab.


  • How can I adjust the line spacing in Word

    To correct spacing in Word highlight the text you wish to change and then select the Home Tab. To expand the options, click on Paragraph. You can adjust the line spacing or set a pre-set line spacing in the Spacing section.

    To insert signature lines in Word go to the Insert Tab and choose Signature line. A blank line is created if you select only a few options.
