Sopore gold trader’s body retrieved from Jhelum 34 days after disappearance

After a gap of 36 days, dead body of the missing Sopore goldsmith was Tuesday recovered from river Jehlum. He was kidnapped and murdered by four accused, arrested by Sopore police earlier. Eyewitnesses said that the body of Tariq Ahmad Malik was floating near Sopore Bypass Bridge Tuesday evening.


Owner of Karat Line Gold Shop at Chota Bazaar Sopore, Tariq Ahmad Malik went missing on December 26, 2017.


According to eyewitnesses, people saw the dead body of deceased Tariq floating in the water near Sopore Bypass Bridge and informed the police. A team of Sopore police later on visited the spot and took custody of the body of Tariq Ahmad.


While talking to The Varmul Post, SDPO Sopore, Mashkoor Ahmad Zargar said that the body was recovered from river Jehlum at Sopore.


“A team of Sopore Police recovered the body Tuesday evening near Bypass Bridge and it has been identified as the body of Tariq Ahmad who was missing from December 26, 2017,” SDPO Sopore said.


Mashkoor Ahmed said that after medical legalities, the body will be handed over to the family.


BMO Sopore, Dr Sami however said that the post mortem of the body will be conducted by a team of doctors on Wednesday.


“The body is still in police custody and post mortem will be carried out tomorrow as we can’t conduct the post mortem during the night hours,” BMO Sopore said.


Earlier  police said that after looting money and gold by four people, Tariq was kidnapped, strangulated and his body disposed-off into the River Jhelum.


Tariq Ahmad Malik (32), son Ghulam Rasool Malik, a resident of Kalaroos Kupwara was kidnapped, and then allegedly strangulated by the accused on December 26, 2017 from his shop at Sopore.


The goldsmith according to police was residing at Muslim Peer Sopore from last 20 years.


The accused found involved in kidnapping and murder  were later on identified as Mohammad Sajad Lara son of Mohammad Afzal Lara, Mohammad Adil Lara son of Mohammad Afzal Lara, residents of Muslim Peer Sopore; Ghulam Mohammad Lara son of Ghulam Qadir Lara, and Nayeem Ahmad Lara son of Ghulam Mohammad Lara both, residents of Ashpeer, Sopore and have been booked in kidnap and murder case.
The accused as per police report confessed before the police that they kidnapped and strangulated the shopkeeper with a sole aim to extort money and gold from him.


In Tariq’s remembrance and solidarity with his family members Traders Federation Sopore led by Haji Mohammad Ashraf Ganaie has given a call for complete shutdown in Sopore tomorrow on Wednesday.
