Q. CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS BRIEFLY ABOUT YOURSELF AND PREVIOUS POSTING
I am Dr Syed Masood. I have done PG in Public health from Delhi. I am in administration since 2011. Sopore was my first challenging post because prior to me they had changed some 7 BMOs in just 3 years. It was a challenge to me to handle this volatile station.
Although it was designated as a SDH but I must say it was progressing like a normal PHC. After I joined we started many services there. For instance, it was state’s first hospital, which carried 24×7 surgeries; it was country’s first SDH where we did plastic surgeries and neuro surgeries. Like these we started many other branches and also fully upgraded and computerized labs. The idea was just to bring the services to the doorstep of people. I had good team of doctors in addition to support of Dr Saleem Ur Rehman, Director Health. But sadly, now I hear things are not well there, they have stopped many services.
Q. OF LATE, WE HAVE SEEN MANY CHANGES IN DISTRICT HOSPITAL BARAMULLA, TELL US WHAT KIND OF FACILITIES WE HAVE.
When I joined this hospital, OPD used to be operational up to 2 in afternoon only and only emergency ward used to be functional after that with two medical officers. I immediately stopped that and extended it till 4 o clock with 24×7 consultants. Now here we have also started 24×7 surgeries. Night surgeries were a big challenge but Alhamdulillah it’s going very good.
We started ECG. We upgraded the central lab, which was in shambles earlier. We made it into a state-of-art fully automatic lab having almost all the parameters that we have in SMHS Srinagar. We do here thyroid, and all the hormone profiles. Apart from that we have a complete biochemistry, hematology, complete blood gas, which is done only in few hospitals of the state. We have full-fledged physiotherapy and DDRC (district disability rehabilitation centre).
DEIC (District early intervention syndrome) was here earlier but was not functional and we made it functional and patients from all 10 medical blocks come here for treatment.
In every hospital you will find that level 2 and level 3 obstructive cases are sent to private center because nowhere except for LD it’s being done. We started treating them here.
Q. DESPITE BEING SUPER SPECIALITY HOSPITAL, PEOPLE STILL PREFER CITY HOSPITALS AND PRIVATE NURSING HOMES. WHAT DO WE LACK HERE?
People are not aware about the facilities. It does not make sense that a patient goes and pays a particular amount to the same specialist at his private center who otherwise does it here also and free. We tried earlier also through various media houses to make people aware about these facilities.
A landmark achievement in past two months is that we have started maxillofacial surgery, it’s a dentistry done only in dental college and nowhere else and we are lucky to have two specialists here with masters – Dr Babar and Dr Amrit Pal Singh. We are doing these surgeries successfully and on routine basis.
In terms of pediatrics I must tell you we have upgraded our SMCU where the new born sick neonates of one day or two days old are kept. It is completely on modern lines as per the IPCH and NAB guidelines. Earlier we used to refer them to GB pant.
We have reduced referrals by 60% and it’s a biggest achievement for DH Baramulla. If you check the referral records of today and of 8 months ago, you will see the drop in referrals.
My endeavor is to start the CVT and I have got the manpower. We can have heart and lung surgeries here. I am waiting for the OT block to operational and you will see InshaAllah CVTs is done in Baramulla.
Ayuesh and panchkarama is done here on modern lines like steam therapy, cup therapy and likewise we have established a herbal garden here in the hospital.
Things that are in pipeline are dialysis, Cardio vascular surgeries – which is about to happen within short span of time. We are waiting for some logistic support like theatre and the equipment and some additional skilled manpower.
Q. PATIENTS OFTEN COMPlAINT ABOUT LACK OF STAFF HERE. WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATUS ABOUT THAT?
We are definitely short of staff in this hospital. It’s terribly low. We have dearth of staff in all categories like consultants, doctors, Para medic and others because this hospital has the staff of old 100 bed hospital whereas we are operating as 300 bed hospital now. And even from that 100-bed staff, we don’t have all of them here now.
Q. THERE HAVE BEEN INSTANCES WHERE PATIENTS BLAME HOSPITAL LAB FOR WRONG TEST REPORTS. REPORTS DONE HERE AND IN PRIVATE ARE OFTEN DIFFERENT.
How can you say outside report is authentic and ours is not? As I said we have upgraded the labs. We have same equipment that we have in central labs of SKIMS and JVC. Outside they don’t have the kind of quality equipment that we have. But still if there is some particular case you can bring it in my notice and I will look into it and cross check.
Q. WHAT ABOUT THE HYGIENE IN THIS HOPITAL. WASHROOMS IN PARTICULAR ARE VERY DIRTY.
Washrooms we are outsourcing in a week’s time so that there should not be problem anymore. Don’t you see a visible change in hygiene here from how it’s now and how it was earlier?
Q. BARAMULLA GOT MEDICAL COLLEGE RECENTLY. HOW IS THAT GOING TO HELP THIS HOSPITAL
Medical college is something big thing happening in Baramulla. It’s going to change the health care system in Kashmir. We will be having lots of doctors and job opportunities.
Q. WHY THERE IS NO DEDICATED PARKING LOT IN THIS HOSPITAL.
We do not have a macadamized parking lot. We have fenced the green areas and developed them as lawns and we are fencing front side also. And we will have a designated parking lot very soon after macadamizing the area.
Q. EARLIER THERE WERE SOME MALFUNCTIONS IN POWER BACK UP SYSTEM OF HOSPITAL?
Solar power equipment was discarded here and was dysfunctional now and few days’ back we restored and commissioned it again and its smoothly functioning now. We get additional solar power backup from it.
